Democrats suffer “political heartburn” on immigration
Democratic leaders in Congress are facing an insurgency by moderate and conservative Democrats who want an “enforcement only” approach to immigration, the Politico reported Tuesday.
At the same time, most Democrats, business leaders and immigrants’ rights and church groups want action on a broader bill that combines enforcement and tougher employer sanctions with additional visa and legalization programs for the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants, the article said.
As a result, Democrats “are suffering political heartburn.”
If they go too far on enforcement, Democrats risk alienating their liberal base and the rising number of Latino voters who could vote in large enough numbers to affect the outcome in previously Republican states like Arizona, Colorado, Florida and Nevada, according to the Politico.
