Republicans, Democrats to introduce border security bill
A group of House Republicans and Democrats are planning to introduce a measure Tuesday that they said would “secure America’s borders” and “reduce illegal immigration through interior enforcement.”
The lawmakers include Reps. Brian Bilbray, R-Calif., Heath Shuler, D-N.C., Ciro Rodriguez, D-Texas, Bart Stupak, D-Mich., and Tom Feeney, R-Fla.
According to a press release, the legislation would increase Border Patrol agents by 8,000 and provide employers “the tools they need” to verify if workers are in the United States legally.
The measure would also “improve the enforcement of current federal laws through better coordination between federal, state, and local law enforcement,” according to the release.
The lawmakers said that the legislation, dubbed the SAVE Act, already enjoys broad bipartisan support with 78 original cosponsors.
A Capitol Hill press conference is set for Tuesday.
