Republicans attack Hillary on driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants

There is more fallout from Sen. Hillary Clinton’s confusing answer on whether she supports a plan by New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer to give driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants.

HILLe_Cli.jpgAfter seeming to go both ways on the issue during Tuesday’s Democratic presidential debate, Clinton’s campaign said the New York senator does support the plan.

This brought criticism from GOP White House hopefuls, who said giving driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants could lead to voter fraud.

According to National Journal’s “The Hotline,” former Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee told an audience in Nevada: “When you get your driver’s license, you get an opportunity to register to vote. So, you know what that’s going to lead to.”

And former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee told the National Journal: “Voting is a precious right of a citizen. It is absolutely not the privilege that should be extended to somebody who is not a citizen of this country, period.”

HUCKABEE2_.jpgHere is what Clinton said during the Democratic debate: “What is the governor supposed to do? He is dealing with a serious problem. We have failed. And George Bush has failed. Do I think this is the best thing for any governor to do? No. But do I understand the sense of real desperation, trying to get a handle on this? Remember, in New York, we want to know who’s in New York. We want people to come out of the shadows. He’s making an honest effort to do it.”
