Palin keeps low profile, meets with Cindy McCain and Laura Bush
Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, John McCain’s choice for vice president, kept a low profile Tuesday as the Republican national committee tried to get back on track in the wake of Hurricane Gustav.Although Republicans rushed to her defense following the news that her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant, Palin herself stayed out of the limelight on the second day of the convention, a time when vice presidential candidates typically make the rounds of key state delegations.
In fact, Palin cancelled a planned speech Tuesday afternoon to a Republican group of anti-abortion activists, an event that had attracted a lot of media attention.
The only official word of Palin’s activities Tuesday came late in the afternoon when the McCain campaign headquarters in Virginia sent out a press release saying the vice presidential candidate met privately with former first lady Laura Bush and McCain’s wife Cindy.
The press release did not provide any details of where or when the meeting took place and what happened during the meeting. But the press release included a photograph of the three women together, smiling.

Bush’s GOP convention speech
President Bush tonight will speak by satellite from the White House to Republican National Convention delegates.
Look for about eight minutes, as compared to the 15 minutes he had planned to deliver in person Monday night, an appearance cancelled because of Hurricane Gustav.
Here’s what White House Press Secretary Dana Perino said about it:
“It will be a shorter speech than was planned in the hall, but the entire convention is a little bit shorter. … The president is very grateful for this opportunity. He’s going to express his gratitude to all the people gathered in the hall. He will talk a little bit about the hurricane, but mainly the speech is going to focus on John McCain and why he believes that John McCain has the qualities that are demanded by the commander-in-chief role.”
“I think that it worked best - because also, remember, when you’re moving the president of the United States, you can’t just run over to Reagan National Airport (not far from the White House) and hop on a shuttle to the Twin Cities. It takes a lot of logistical effort to move a President anywhere. And thankfully, there’s technology that exists today that President Bush can give a satellite address that will be live for the people in the hall. And another reason that the speech would be shorter is that - I don’t know if you’ve ever been there, but watching something on video for a whole 15 minutes taxes the patience.”

Ron Paul’s Rally for the Republic
There’s much enthusiasm and anticipation among Ron Paul supporters in advance of today’s “Rally for the Republic,” an event expected to draw tens of thousands to the Target Center in Minneapolis.
Paul, the Texas congressman and unsuccessful candidate for the GOP presidential nomination, is the featured speaker, to be introduced by Barry Goldwater Jr. as part of a nine-hour program that also includes former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura.
Here’s a look at some of the postings by Paul supporters on a blog dedicated to the event, starting with spokesman Jesse Benton’s response to questions about whether the event would go on as planned:
“We’ve been getting a lot of questions about the rally schedule in light of the RNC’s plans to suspend activities on Monday. Well, we’re moving forward as planned. Too many people have traveled too far and worked too hard to stop now. Dr. Paul is a great guy, but he knows his limitations - and even he can’t control the weather Our thoughts and prayers will be with our fellow Americans in Louisiana and East Texas, but there is nothing important that bureaucrats and elected officials can do in this type of emergency - other than get in the way.”

Some other postings:
“I finally found a place to park my semi-trailer, a motel, and the boss isn’t mad at me anymore for coming up here. So, I’m siked and ready to celebrate all that’s happening with the Liberty Movement. I have seen something on a news alert that was calling it “Ronstock” … Get it? Woodstock … Ronstock…” Lane Culpepper.
“I am happy that the Campaign for Liberty Rally is going on. We need to show what the clear difference is the freedom response to a natural disaster looks like versus allowing the fed govt. take over.” Clint H.
“ I agree, the show should go on. All the more reason to have it in the first place. Why should the fed govt be involved in something that is a state issue? Oh, right, the govt has to get involved in EVERYTHING.” Dale H.
“So what’s the dress code at the rally?” Marcus.
“As far as taking colloidal silver with every meal, while silver compounds have been known to aid in the elimination of diseases not touched by modern antibiotics. Prophylactic use of silver is dangerous. Although the human body is efficient at removing silver it’s not the same for everyone. Cumulative poisoning is a very real side effect such as Argyria. The skin and other organs collect silver compounds causing the skin to become blue, and other internal problems to occur.” Dr Dave.
