Laura Bush visits the Texas delegation

First Lady Laura Bush was a surprise guest and the first guest speaker at the Texas delegation’s breakfast at a downtown hotel.

State party spokesman Hans Klingler said she was expected to accompany Cindy McCain to similar Monday stops with the Louisiana and Mississippi delegations.

Bush told the Texans: “I had to start with my home state, Texas,” Bush said.

Bush said she believes pre-Gustav coordination among the state, local and federal levels of government is “so much better” now than before.

“Hopefully, the damage won’t be too severe,” she said.

She also said she looks forward to the McCain-Palin ticket.

“I am proud that I am going to get my wish to vote for a Republican woman,” she said, to cheers and applause.

She said she and President Bush “were both surprised with her nomination, but thrilled with her nomination. We know how tough she is.”

Bush singled out Palin’s past job as a mayor.

“Mayor across the country will know how close your constituents are… She’ll bring a perspective to our ticket that we haven’t had in a long time. And that is a very, very strong local perspective, of knowing what life is like in cities and towns all across our country.”
