Standing tall for domestic oil
Some House Republicans are continuing their protest this week, demanding that Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., end the August recess to allow a vote on oil drilling. Since Aug. 1, they have been taking turns discussing energy policy on the House floor, even though the microphones are turned off. Some tourists sit in the chamber each day, listening, applauding or, in the case of many youngsters, napping.
On Tuesday afternoon, Rep. Trent Franks, R-Ariz., took to the floor to whip up the tourists’ enthusiasm for reducing U.S. dependence on foreign oil. “We need oil and gas right now,” he said. And America knows how to accomplish great tasks in short time frames, he said. For example, in the last century, it developed an atom bomb in just a few years with the help of “a little Jewish guy named Einstein,” he said.
For the record: Albert Einstein stood a bit over 5 feet, 9 inches tall when he moved to the United States in 1933. At the time, the average male in this country was 5 feet, 7 inches tall.
