Won’t Take No For An Answer

House Judiciary Chairman John Conyers, D-Mich., announced Wednesday that his committee would open a formal inquiry into President Bush’s use of “presidential signing statements.”

“We are not going to take no for an answer,” said Conyers, lambasting Bush’s use of the statements to sidestep the law.

He vowed to demand answers from the White House about its intention to ignore the ban on torture when needed and its right to open domestic mail when needed.

The White House has long defended the practice of using the statements as a way to express an opinion about legislation.

Whereas, the oath of office of the President of the United States of America reads: “I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the Office of the President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

Whereas, Article II, Section 4 of the Constitution of the United States of America reads: “The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and the conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.”

Resolved, that George Walker Bush, President of the United States of America, is impeached for high crimes and misdemeanors, and that the following articles be exhibited to the Senate by the House of Representatives of the United States, in the name of itself and of the people of the United States, against George Walker Bush, President of the United States, in maintenance and support of its impeachment against him for high crimes and misdemeanors.

*ARTICLE __ *

George Walker Bush, in his conduct of the Office of the President of the United States, in violation of his constitutional oath to faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and to the best of his ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States, and in violation of his constitutional duty to take care that the laws be faithfully executed, has arrogated excessive power to the executive branch in violation of basic constitutional principles of the separation of powers by formally declaring his intent on numerous occasions to violate the laws properly enacted by the Congress by appending a “signing statement” to legislation that asserts his right to interpret legislation as he pleases and to carve out exceptions to legislation as he sees fit, thereby arrogating to himself legislative powers reserved solely to the Congress as well as interpretative powers reserved solely to the Judiciary by the Constitution.

George Walker Bush has acted in a manner contrary to his trust as president and subversive to constitutional government, to the great prejudice of the cause of law and justice and to the manifest injury of the people of the United States. Wherefore, George Walker Bush, by such conduct, warrants impeachment and trial, and removal from office.

Thank God! At last, the Congress is taking some action concerning the Impeachment of G.W. Bush. From the day of his so-called first election (a Supreme Court decision), the administration has lied, cheated, and abused the laws of this country as mandated by the U.S. Consitiution. He and his cronies have murdered 700,000 Iraqis, displaced millions, and caused the death and maiming of 70,000 American soldiers. They have cut funding for veterans, which leaves the wounded, both physically and mentally, in jeopardy. They have encouraged brutal torture. They have ignored Congressional bills by tacking on (illegal) signing statements. They have committed treason (Wilson/Plame case) and allowed (encouraged?) illegal voting practices. We have lost nearly all our civil rights and been spied upon. We MUST get rid of these criminals NOW! Call or write your congressional representatives. WAKE UP! GET ACTIVE!

Let’s not forget about our vice-president. He needs to go, as well.
