Wal-mart takes on Craigslist.com
By | Tuesday, June 3, 2008, 11:21 AM
You can find everything else at Wal-mart. Now you can find classified ads on its Website too.
The listings are free and are managed by the classified listing site, Oodle.com. You can find them on the list of Web pages on the left side of the home page. Just like everybody on the Web, it looks like Wal-mart is trying to boost page views anyway it can.
With its clout, Wal-mart could do some damage to popular Web services such as Craigslist.com and eBay’s Kijiji.com.
Techcrunch.com points out that Wal-mart has had a dicey history with online ventures but Walmart.com still attracts 26 million visitors a month. For comparison, Amazon.com attracts 47 million.
Oodle and Kijiji have been competing for second place. Craigslist, with 30 million visitors a month, is still the biggest.
I haven’t used them so if anyone has any experience with them, post a comment.

Wal-mart gets huge tax breaks that are unfair to local businesses. They are a major conduit of U.S. dollars to China. Now they want to compete with a free service like craigslist? That stinks.

I have used Craigslist several times and was always successful, buying or selling. The only issue is if the item that you want is highly coveted…, someone else may beat you to it. Otherwise it works great. Rick, were you offering a really good deal, or did YOU just think that it was? …not 1 single email..hmmmm

Rick,
If you got lousy results from Craigslist, you probably posted some lousy stereo deals. They were only Great deals in your mind. Good products priced fairly always sell in the market place.
Yours truly,
Craig

craigslist is a great way to get rid of junk around the house that you don’t feel like taking down and hauling to the dump or goodwill.

What’s not to like about Craigslist? I’ve listed many things and have always had pleasant experiences with the buyers who COME TO MY HOUSE TO GIVE ME CASH for stuff I don’t need.

Craiglist is about the coolest site we’ve found in a long time. We bought our last two autos there at below trade-in and its our consistent pipeline for getting rid of the stuff around the house we no longer want or need. From my observations, things tend to sell at aggressively low prices (i.e. garage sale low) and thus its always the first place to look when buying. OTOH, if you really want to sell something at anywhere near retail you have to be very patient or else go somewhere else.

Hum, I gotta tell ya… I worked for Walmart for nearly 17 years, and they were very good to me. But everytime I hear that they are venturing out to COMPETE or DESTROY another business, I just don’t get it. They just can’t leave anything alone! I felt I was very fortunate to have personally know Mr. Sam before he passed. He was not a greedy man. And he had more respect than to go against the entire world. He was a self made millionaire, for this reason. Shame on Wally world! I am hoping that Craigslist holds their own. I know I will continue to support them, and stay clear of Walmart’s new site!!!!!!!!
