Election Day Question: Who were among the greatest U.S. presidents?
By Shelley Emling | Monday, November 3, 2008, 08:39 AM
With the election finally upon us, the venerable Times newspaper of London has decided to enlist the help of a panel of staffers to pick the greatest U.S. presidents of all time.
So who is the greatest of them all? It’s no surprise that No. 1 on the list is Abraham Lincoln, chosen because of his ability to keep the fledgling nation alive when it could have collapsed.
The other best commanders-in-chief include:
2) George Washington 3) Franklin D. Roosevelt 4) Thomas Jefferson 5) Theodore Roosevelt
One surprise is that Ronald Reagan comes in at No. 8. According to the Times’ American editor, Gerard Baker, he “revived American self-confidence at its lowest ebb.” (Incidentally, Bill Clinton is ranked 23rd and Jimmy Carter is ranked 32nd — narrowly escaping the worst 10.)
So where is George W. Bush ranked? He’s tied with the dastardly Richard Nixon at No. 37.
The worst all-time president, according to the panel, was actually James Buchanan, whose failure to prevent the Civil War was noted as the greatest single mistake ever made by any president.

While it is debatable about who is/was the best president, there is no way that Jimmy Carter is not the worst. He brought us incredible: inflation, interest rates, unemployment, and a weakened position among world powers. To make matters worse, the media still tapes sound bites from this idiot.

“One surprise is that Ronald Reagan comes in at No. 8.”
Nicely biased phrasing there. It’s no surprise to anyone who survived the Carter years. And ask me how much I care what Europeans think of our choice in Presidents. (Shudder.)

I think that Barack Obama will go down in history as one of the most “beloved” of all presidents. He will be a president for ALL Americans. The divisiveness that has festered during this long contest will fade as the wisdom of his decisions and the long term benefit of his leadership gradually becomes apparent.
As an old man, years from now, he will be viewed as America’s great elder statesman and leaders the world over will call on if not depend on his even handed judgment.
This may sound ridiculous to some, maybe even many, just remember that you heard it from me first. CGS

Calvin,
I don’t think Obama will inherit enough positive tools given the worlds situation to become more than average - this is not a slam. Give the finacial, oil, jobs, terrorism situation he or McCain will have to deal with crisis after crisis which will not allow enough of their personalities to show.
Obama will be known as the first AA president, but with limited experience and a bad economy, that may be the extent of his term(s)

Calvin, can we wait at least until he’s won the election before we canonize Obama? Geez.
It’s that same sycophantic attitude that places Kennedy near the top even though he didn’t do anything and fails to blame Johnson for the Vietnam War and decades of wasteful spending mandated by The ‘Great’ Society. And take WWII away from FDR and his presidency is an entirely different story. The Depression only got worse through his first two terms.

1) Lincoln - obvious, the republic was drowning. In 4 years, he made decisions of a true powerbroker.
2) Washington - Best move he made was stepping down after two terms. Could have stayed for life…he was THAT popular. Set in motion our ideal of power always in transition…which brings new fresh ideas. Good job GW.
2) John Adams - First to live in the White House, this man was the strategy behind Washington’s brute during the revolution. Diplomatic force….kept US out of wars that would have threatened the new republic.
3) FD Roosevelt - Social action and social justice were introduced to our national conscience by the Great Depression and this forward thinker. The REAL deal.
Looking forward to tomorrow! CHANGE is around the corner and its exciting!

Texas Pete, you make excellent points, and you may be right. However, I am a man of faith and a student of history.
Great things have always been possible for this nation. See, America is something special. We are only 232 years old and look at how far we have come. No, Texas Pete, I may be naive, but I BELIEVE IN US. CGS

Au contraire Calvin,
Obama will be remembered indeed, but whether he is remembered for his gross incompetence, rampant scandals, or unbridled arrogance (or all 3) is up to him.
Nonetheless, productive citizens will be bridled with National Obama Day (or week or month), the Obama monument, having every city in American with an Obama Avenue, a push for Obama to be on the currency even while in office—and if all this isn’t done immediately, it will be chalked up to (you guessed it) racism. Beautiful.
If Mr. Obama won’t protect the unborn, he won’t protect you. And you should never forget it.

This ranking follows almost exactly the rankings done by the Wall Street Journal with a heavy dose of Federalist Society members. Any ranking that does not have our current president dead last or almost dead last (James Buchanan will always give any incompetant a run for his money). George Bush did the most to help increase the rankings of Bill Clinton; seriously how do you screw things this badly considering the great hand that Bush started his presidency with? Bush is such a scewup that he could find a way to f* up an anvil.

Mike D do a little research, look what Nixon and Ford dumped on him. Ford’s way of handling the economy was to hand out ‘WIN’ buttons, “Whip Inflation Now”, didn’t sound like a surpluse there. Plus a 7% unemployment rate, nice thing is, bush has gotten Jimmy off the hook.

FDR? Seriously? The guy that socialized America more that any other president. All of his programs couldn’t even pull us out of a depression, it took a war to do that. The media loved FDR just like they love Obama, why do you think there were never any images showing FDR from the waist down. Many of his programs are still killing us today.

Until both political parties (especially congressional leaders) reach out for unity, it will never happen. Pelosi and Reid have shown no effort since they have been in control. Hastert before them didn’t also. It does’nt matter who the chief executive is. Leaders in both parties must forget the t** for tat and personal attacks. I hope attacks on the next president are not as personal as the attacks on past occupants have been.

As far as greatest presidents, definitely think Reagan ranks in the top 5. Carter should be definitely be in the bottom 5. Carter was an okay ex-president when he was just building houses. Once he started complaining about our country, I don’t even want him associated with Georgia anymore.
CSG, Obama (if elected) will not be a president for ALL Americans because he won’t represent me or any of the people I know. I don’t believe in abortion on demand, taking money from one and giving it to another, or creating a national civilian security force (scary).
So, while I’m not panicking like some liberals are about the possibility of McCain, I really don’t look forward to the next 4 years if Obama wins.

Let’s see here..I agree Carter was among the worst but its not like he took an office that was in good condition..(see Nixon and Ford). Bush, the second bush that is was probably the worst president to date..Im suprised that Clinton isnt higher. Nevermind the man’s personal life he ran this country pretty well..well at least I know my pockets were a whole lot better during his tenure. Speaking of his personal life..why did he get exposed for something every president before him freely got away with it?..and I know Im bout to get a bunch of people mad with this one but Ronald Reagan was one the worst presidents this country has seen..even worst for the black communities across the nation. Carter set it up(panama canal for example) and Reagan exercised the plan to perfection..yes he did make money for the country in the process but set the inevitable in play at the same time..check ya history look at crime rates and drug usage during Reagan’s term. The drug game rose to an all-time high under Reagan. So at the bottom of my list would list George W. Bush..last..Carter..above him..and Reagan above him…thank you!!

Frankly, it’s still too soon to make any historical judgements on Clinton or either Bush presidency. The politics are still too fresh and long-term ramifications of their actions are yet to be seen.
And I had my disagreements with Reagan at the time, but the night-and-day difference he made after the Carter administration (economically and diplomatically) and his efforts that led to bringing down the Soviet Union make up for his deficit spending and the loss of those Marines in Lebanon.

ronald Reagan is easily the greatest president in the last 75 years. What FDR started was finally tempered by Reagan, He was a supporter of the individual and not into group. He had common sense and you never had to wonder what side of an issue stood on. Whenever Tip’Oneal and the other libs would demagogue an issue, he would take it straight to the American people and explain in plain english what was needed. He dropped the top income tax rate from 79% to 28%, dropped the top capital gains rate down to 20 % and doubled the amount of revenues collected by the government. he saw the immorality of the estate tax and tried to have it appealed. Perhaps his greatest legacy was that he won the cold war with the Ruskies made you proud to be an American again. Wow those were heady times. If the republicans would nominate someone of his caliber again elections would’nt even be close. BTW, the reason the Clinton years were so good is because of Newt and the CWA republicanswho offered up laws and ideas in the Reagan vein of thinking that Clinton signed into law. He governed like a Republican fically and a liberal socially which is as close to a libertarian as one can get in this day and age.

It is quite funny haw after all these years and all thats happened since then, so many people still don’t understand the Carter presidency. When he came to office, this country was coming of its second most unstable period. When he took office, the country was still suffering from the divided wound of Vietnam, The instability in the Middle East was just starting to boil. That is what caused our first major energy crisis, not Carter. Had Reagan not dismantled all of the things put in place to make us more energy independant, we would not be so desparate now. The Panama Canal was always supposed to go back to the Panamanian people, Carter just upheld our end of the bargan. And on top of all of that, he had to follow Nixon and all the C**P associated with Watergaate. ( I know Ford was right before him, But in ‘76, the office of the President was still stained from Tricky Dick! Jimmy Carter came along at a time when this country needed stability. He was the right person at the right time. Nothing more, and Nothing less.

Lincoln abused his powers. I don’t care if he made stern decisions in the time of war. He had disregard for Writ of Habeus Corpus - removing power from legislative and judicial branches - and giving the power to himself. Very authoritarian. I disagree with slavery, but Lincoln violated a simple tenet of America…and I am shocked that this is often overlooked.

Lincoln , FDR and Teddy were all great presidents, but then they didn’t have to run a campaign with 24-7 news/paparazzi digging into every nook and cranny of their lives.
As for most moral of Presidents?? According to today’s standards that would have to be Jimmy Carter. Perhaps not the best man to serve in the Oval Office, but one who lived to a very high moral code.

Prior to FDR, the top 1% of earners in this country possesed 49% of the TOTAL WEALTH. That means at that time, single individuals could corner markets and influence the entire finacial structure of this country. The social programs that FDR inplemented this country to grow because it created a new class of investors, and put an economic ladder in place for everyone to use to advance their economic position. Study your economic history before you start to spout that type of bologna…

You can tell the people blogging here are not historians and get most of their info from Rolling Stone, MSNBC or Entertainment Tonight.
My list would be: 1. Washington - anyone who has seriously studied GW would come down with him at the top or #2 spot. He avoided problems that Lincoln did not, and he led the nation in ways that no one else ever has or ever will. Selfless to the extreme, and he was the brightest man to ever lead & build our nation. 2. Lincoln - see other’s comments. However, his reduction of liberty is troubling and he did not succeed in avoiding the war. 3. John Adams 4. Ronald Reagan 5. Teddy Roosevelt
Overrated: FDR, JKF (big time) and Eisenhower. Worst ever: Carter, Buchanan and US Grant.

For the record REAGAN DID NOT WIN THE COLD WAR!!!!! That is the great lie of the last 30 years. Carter is easily the worst president of this century and probably of the republic. His picture is by feeble hairless weenie in the dictionary. Have you forgotten 17 percent interest rates, gas shortages and stagflation while Carter clutched his Mr. Rogers cardigan and told America they were suffering from a “malaise”. When confronted with Soviet invasion he boycotted the Olympics and crippled American grain exports. Carter was a highly intelligent but weak minded wonk with the character of a rabbit in heat. His presidency was marked by ineffectual leadership and dithering. Since his days as president, he has done the unthinkable and become even more of a detriment to this nation. May his name live in Infamy!

Any historian who claims he can judge an administration that isn’t even finished is working his own agenda, and is NOT a historian, he’s a politician. A propagandist. History emerges only with time, long after the dust has settled.
And in my estimation, anyone that can deny Reagan’s role (along with Pope John Paul II and Margaret Thatcher) in the fall of Communism has only a tenuous grip on reality. Reagan had his failures, but that wasn’t one of them.
